Abortion Provider Appreciation Day: Honoring the People Who Make Abortion Care Possible

Today is Abortion Provider Appreciation Day, established in 1996 to honor Dr. David Gunn, an OB-GYN and abortion provider whose life was tragically cut short on March 10, 1993. This year marks the 30th anniversary of this day recognizing abortion providers and the care they provide.
Providing abortion care today takes compassion, skill, and courage, especially in the United States where access to care can be limited by restrictive laws that differ from state to state. This is why abortion providers work every day to make care more accessible and equitable for the people who need it.
Abortion providers care deeply about their patients and believe everyone deserves respectful, compassionate care. Like us at carafem, they know abortion is healthcare and trust people to make their own decisions about their bodies and their futures. Many choose this work because they want patients to have accurate information, supportive care, and the freedom to decide what is right for them.
Today and every day, we celebrate the people who make abortion care safe, supportive, and accessible.
To the physicians, nurses, midwives, doulas, volunteers, receptionists, advocates, donors, and so many others who make this care possible, thank you.
Here are five ways you can celebrate abortion providers today and all year long. Thank you to our friends at the Abortion Care Network for inspiring many of the ideas.
1. Send a digital thank you note.
Leave a message of support on this Kudoboard. A few kind words can make a big difference.
2. Follow, share, and amplify abortion providers.
Spread the word about Abortion Provider Appreciation Day by sharing social posts using #CelebrateAbortionProviders.
3. Speak about abortion openly and respectfully.
Help normalize abortion care by speaking about it the same way you would any other healthcare service. When we treat abortion like the healthcare it is, we help reduce stigma and make it easier for people to get care.
4. Donate to support abortion care.
Every dollar donated to carafem helps keep our health centers open and caring for our communities.
5. Know where to find abortion care.
We provide in-person care in health centers in Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Chicago, and medically-supported abortion pills at home in a growing number of states.
To abortion providers everywhere, thank you for your compassion, skill, and determination. Your work helps make abortion care more accessible for people who need it most.
