Sexy Summer Tips

In case you haven’t heard, sex is expected to make a major comeback this summer. As covid restrictions continue to ease and dating apps in the U.S. band together, people are expecting this to be the sexiest summer we’ve seen in a while.

Before going all in, it’s a good idea to do a little prep work. That’s right, we’re talking about getting tested and birth control! And lucky for you, we’ve got just the tips to keep you protected for whatever happens as we plow into the hottest time of the year!

1. STI Testing and Treatment

Did you know that most sexually transmitted infections have no signs or symptoms? A big part of taking care of your health is getting tested, so reintroducing infection and STI testing into your post-covid health care routine is a good idea.

At carafem, we offer STI testing, UTI testing, and testing for vaginal infections.

2. Birth Control

After a year where it felt like everything was out of control, taking control of your contraception method has never been easier. We offer a wide range of family planning options including condoms, birth control pills, IUD/IUCs, birth control implants, and Depo Provera shots.

Learn more about all the birth control options that we offer, but don’t worry if picking a method feels a little overwhelming -- we’re here to help find the best option for you! You can always call us with questions at (855) SAY-CARA.

3. Grab the Lube

One thing that goes hand-in-hand with summer fun is getting wet. So don’t forget to stock up on lube. Why use lube? A better question would actually be, why not use lube? Lube is great! According to a 2013 study, lube use was associated with higher ratings of sexual pleasure and satisfaction in both solo masturbation and partnered sexual activities.

Something to keep in mind - opt for a water-based lube if you are using latex condoms or diaphragms. Oil-based lubricants, such as petroleum jelly, baby oil, or vegetable oils are not healthy to use internally. They are also likely to damage latex condoms and/or diaphragms and make them less effective at preventing pregnancy or STIs. So grab a bottle and apply liberally 💦

4. Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception, also commonly known as the morning-after pill or Plan B, is a last line of defense against pregnancy. To put it simply, EC pills are best for “oops” moments and should be taken as soon as possible within the first 72 hours after unprotected sex has occurred.

If the 72-hour window has passed, you can get a doctor’s prescription for the EC brand Ella, which can be taken at any time within five days (or 120 hours) after sex to reduce the risk of pregnancy. Ella is also a great option for people with high BMIs, as other EC options can be less effective on those with increased body weight.

Pro tip - an IUD can also be used as EC, you must make an appointment and have a provider insert it as soon as possible after unprotected sex. carafem can do this, usually as soon as same or next day! carafem also offers over-the-counter EC for a low cost with no appointment necessary - so it’s super easy to stop in and stock up so you have them handy. You never know when an accident might happen!

5. Online and In-office Abortion Care

That’s right, accidents happen. And finding out you’re pregnant when you don’t want to be might put a damper on that sexy summer vibe 😬. If that happens, rest assured that we’re here for you. There are a few different options when it comes to abortion care, but the two main methods that carafem offers are the abortion pill and the in-office abortion procedure (also known as MVA).

carafem has also been providing at-home abortion pill care via secure video consultation and discreet mailing for over a year and we’re continuing to expand abortion access to people not in the immediate area of one of our locations. Learn more about all our abortion options here.

6. Time to Play

In a development that surprised no one, the sales of sex toys skyrocketed during the pandemic. But just because lockdowns are ending doesn’t mean you have to put your toys away. Sex toys, whether used for solo sessions or partnered party times, are a great way to bring the heat to your summer. Need some suggestions? Don’t worry, we got you. Our guide from the SexToyCollective not only has aaahh-mazing sex toys, they also won’t get your preggers 🎉

Finally, it’s time to have sex again. But as we’ve learned over the past year taking precautions – like wearing a mask, getting tested regularly, or taking birth control – are a good way to stay safe and healthy. Give us a call at 855-SAY-CARA if you need STI testing & treatment, birth control, or abortion care, or schedule an appointment online.
