Some patients prefer to be more aware of what’s going on during a procedure, while others want to be deeply relaxed. IV sedation allows patients to remain conscious while feeling relaxed and drowsy, and many remember little or none of the procedure afterward.

“Our patients continually shape the care we provide,” said Melissa Grant, co-founder and chief operations officer at carafem. “Some people want additional pain medication and to feel as relaxed as possible during their procedure. Others want to stay fully alert and don’t like the feeling of being sleepy or sedated. There isn’t one right choice. By expanding our pain management options, we’re giving people more ways to choose the experience that feels right for them.”

Illinois has become an important access point for abortion care in the Midwest and beyond. In 2025, more than 40% of patients came to our Chicago clinic from out of state, and most chose procedural abortion. As more people travel to Illinois for care, we’re investing in expanding access and improving the patient experience with additional options for pain management.
