Sexual health tips for a great school year

Back to School Esentials

Heading back to college or university? If so, you’ve probably got a million things on your mind. But don’t forget about your sexual health! Here are some tips for how to make sure you can be safe and healthy - but still have fun and get your work done - in the new school year!

Tip 1: Think about birth control NOW

If you’re a female-bodied person who has sex with men, it’s a good idea to think ahead when it comes to birth control. There are a range of birth control options out there to choose from. An IUD or implant can be a great way to prevent pregnancy either long term or short term without having to think about it on a daily basis. (And if you live near DC, Chicago or Atlanta, you can get it at carafem!) But there are a lot of other options too if that’s not right for you.

Tip 2: Keep some condoms around!

Because you never know when you might meet that cute new somebody. And it never hurts to be the person your friends can go to for a condom if they meet a cute new somebody! You can pick up condoms at one of our health centers, or buy a stash at the drugstore. Condoms protect against both pregnancy and STIs.

Tip 3: Think about what you want

Especially if you’re starting at a new campus, the first few months can be really fun and exciting! You’re meeting new people, or reuniting with friends, and there are probably some great parties. It’s a good idea to know what you want before you go all-out.

Are you interested in meeting lots of people and just seeing where things go? Are you hoping to start a new relationship that’s more serious? Or are you already in a relationship and you just want to have fun with your friends? It’s all good - as long as you are happy with whatever you’re doing. Knowing what you want helps you have a great time and avoid doing things you’re not comfortable with.

Think About Fun

Tip 4: Have fuuuuuuuuun!

College is a great time to explore and have fun. Ever wonder how to have great sex when privacy may be a challenge? This article has some great tips (we’re big fans of tip #8)!

Tip 5: But have a backup plan!

You can have the best-laid plans, but things can still go wrong! It never hurts to have a spare dose of emergency contraception (EC) on-hand, or at least know the closest place to get it if you need it (hint: carafem carries it, for a low cost).

Tip 6: Don’t forget your health!

Do you have a regular doctor (primary care physician) near you at school? Why not schedule your annual check-up now? If it doesn’t work out for you to have a doctor near school, check out your other options.

Some options to explore:

  • Can you get your sexual health taken care of at your campus health center, and if so, can they give you a pelvic exam, prescribe you birth control, and conduct STI screening?

  • Is there a women’s or reproductive health clinic nearby?

If you have any questions, or need any help sorting through your options, know that carafem is here for you. Get started online or give us a call at (855) SAY-CARA.
